Mets make flurry of additions at buzzer including move for Todd Frazier

The New York Mets were quiet until the buzzer on trade deadline day

The New York Mets had a devastating weekend against the New York Yankees. They had a chance to put their cross-town rival in a severe tailspin. They swept a Friday doubleheader after winning on a walk-off Friday night. Then, they lost the next three games to the Yankees. This included two games in extra innings and one game on a walk-off wild pitch.

The Mets needed a win at the MLB Trade Deadline as they are the fourth-worst team in the National League, but still just 1.5 games back of the St. Louis Cardinals for the final playoff spot. The Mets are clearly not looking to sell, and want to make the playoffs in this strange year, even if that means a first-round matchup with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Mets waited until the last minute to make some moves

The Mets looked like they were going to stand pat, but seemingly all at once, Brodie Van Wagenen made a flurry of moves. No, trading Edwin Diaz wasn’t one of them, unfortunately.

First, they traded for Texas Rangers catcher Robinson Chirinos as per MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand. Later, it came out that third baseman and former Met Todd Frazier was also part of the deal. As of right now, the Rangers are getting a player to be named later.

Then, also right at the deadline, they traded for relief pitcher Miguel Castro. New York sent left-handed pitcher Kevin Smith and possibly cash or another player at a later date.

The Mets clearly made big-boy moves at the very end, even though it didn’t really cost them a lot. The only tangible piece they lost was Kevin Smith, who was one of their top-ten prospects.

The Mets don’t feel like they’re out of it. Whether that’s smart or not remains to be seen.
