The Atlanta Braves were one run away from setting a modern-day MLB record at the plate.
In a 60-game, coronavirus-shortened season where there are no fans present, the Braves offense scored, I kid you not, 29 runs on Wednesday night vs. the Miami Marlins. It was one run short of tying the modern-day record of 30 by the 2007 Texas Rangers. Atlanta shattered its franchise record for most runs scored and came within one home run of tying another franchise record.
The Braves scored more runs than the Falcons will score points in Week 1.
This was officially the dumbest and most unforgettable game of the 2020 MLB season. The Braves went yard seven times. Ozzie Albies, Ronald Acuña Jr., Travis d’Arnaud and Freddie Freeman each went yard once, while Adam Duvall crushed balls over the fence three times. It’s a shame starter Tommy Milone couldn’t even factor into the decision, as he went 3.1 innings.
This is what the Braves’ batting order did at Truist Park on Wednesday night to set an NL record.
- Ronald Acuña Jr.: 3-4, four runs, three runs batted in, three walks
- Freddie Freeman: 3-6, two runs, six runs batted in
- Adeiny Hechavarria: 1-1
- Marcell Ozuna: 1-6, one run, one run batted in, one walk, three strikeouts
- Travis d’Arnaud: 2-7, two runs, three runs batted in, two strikeouts
- Dansby Swanson: 3-4, five runs, one walks, one strikeout
- Austin Riley: 2-4, five runs, one run batted in, two walks
- Adam Duvall: 3-4, five runs, nine runs batted in, two ways, one strikeout
- Ozzie Albies: 3-6, three runs, two runs batted in, one strikeout
- Ender Inciarte: 2-5, two runs, one run batted in, one strikeout
Every Brave who had an at-bat on Wednesday got a hit. All but Adeiny Hechavarria scored a run, but he replaced Freeman late in the game. Every starter scored at least one run. The only starter to not bat in a run was shortstop Dansby Swanson. The only starter to not have a multi-hit game was designated hitter Marcell Ozuna. The Braves scored 29 runs on 23 hits and two errors.

We’re never going to see another offensive outburst quite like this in baseball again. It’s unbelievable that the Rangers’ 30-run performance happened this century. There will be at least a few teams in baseball that won’t score 29 runs in their next week of games. How many NFL teams won’t score 29 points in Week 1, probably most, including the strong Atlanta Falcons offense.
It was 38 runs in all, as the Marlins plated nine themselves, but what a night at Truist Park.
