Adam Wainwright was on the fence about playing in 2021
In a shortened season, Wainwright had five wins and a 3.18 ERA, forcing Cardinals fans to ask a serious question: Can they replace such consistent production?
Wainwright has spent his entire career in St. Louis, and been a key member of World Series’ runs. He and Yadier Molina have formed a legendary battery together, breaking records in the process. But with Molina now a free agent, Wainwright is up for grabs as well with both players having played out their contracts with the Cardinals.
The future is uncertain, and despite some interest in a return to St. Louis, both players are curious about following their aspirations elsewhere rather than teaming up for one last run. Wainwright’s son, Charlie, seems to be motivating his father to at least come back for one more year.
How much would it cost to bring both Molina and Wainwright back to St. Louis?
That remains to be seen. The free agent freeze that will be the winter of 2020 into early 2021 will limit the financial means of most teams, including the Cardinals. At an advanced age in their baseball careers, Molina and Wainwright are no longer premium free agents. However, for the nearly guaranteed production they’ll provide, they both fall under the “bargain buy” title.
This is where the Cardinals need to be careful, should they wish to reunite the battery. Both players will have a few suitors if really available, even if that’s later in the offseason. If St. Louis is smart they’ll know exactly when to make a substantial offer. It’s tough to imagine Wainwright in non-Cardinal colors, but if he’s certain about a return to the game, whether for his son or otherwise, St. Louis won’t be the only team with interest.
