After the Atlanta Braves came up short in signing Trevor Rosenthal in his free agency, they are looking at bringing back Shane Greene on a new contract.
With the Atlanta Braves missing out on Trevor Rosenthal in 2021 MLB free agency, they turn their attention to a familiar face in free-agent right-hander Shane Greene. Through late February, Greene remains unsigned.
Rosenthal signed with the Oakland Athletics shortly before spring training. While Braves general manager Alex Anthopoulos said he could add another arm to his bullpen, Atlanta has done a poor job of addressing that this winter. They let Darren O’Day leave for the New York Yankees and Mark Melancon go to the National League-contending San Diego Padres. They have to sign Greene now.
Braves Country will rejoice if Shane Greene returns to Atlanta
Greene would be entering his age-32 season in 2021. He has spent the last year and a half in Braves uniform after being traded to Atlanta by the Detroit Tigers ahead of the 2019 MLB trade deadline. In 55 career games with the Braves, Greene boasts a 3.27 ERA in 52.1 innings pitched with a 1.166 WHIP and 42 punch outs. He is one of the best free-agent relievers on the market.
So why would bringing back Greene make Braves Country so darn happy? It would signify that Atlanta has taken this offseason seriously in an effort to get back to the NLCS and contend for an NL pennant. Signing Charlie Morton away from the Tampa Bay Rays was awesome and so was bringing back Marcell Ozuna on a new deal. Re-upping with Greene would echo those sentiments.
Greene rejoining the Braves in spring training would complete a strong offseason for Atlanta.
