If the Yankees actually fire Aaron Boone, who should be hired to take over?

The New York Yankees are off to a tough start this season, so who could step in as the manager if Aaron Boone is fired?

The New York Yankees ended a five-game losing streak with a 3-1 win over the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday night, but they are still just 6-10 on the season, and losing 10 of their first 15 was their worst start since 1997.

On Monday, general manager Brian Cashman expressed faith that the team will get it turned around and said Boone is not on the hot seat. That could count as a dreaded vote of confidence, but this era of Yankees’ baseball is far different from the era led by George Steinbrenner. George’s sons operate largely out of the public eye as owners, and they are far more patient. Cashman has never made an in-season managerial change as GM, and the last time the Yankees made such a change at all was 1990.

But the Yankees’ faithful is restless, and Boone is their easiest target as the team has often looked listless thus far. Public opinion and callers into the New York radio shows won’t faze Cashman, but it’s worth wondering how bad things could get and where the point is that Boone would be on the hot seat.

If Boone is fired during this season, here are three candidates to replace him.

MLB Rumors: Who should Yankees hire if Aaron Boone gets fired

3. Phil Nevin

Nevin has been the Yankees’ third base coach for the last three seasons under Boone. Before a one-season stint on the San Francisco Giants’ coaching staff in 2017, the former No. 1 overall pick as a player was a minor league manager in the Detroit Tigers and Arizona Diamondbacks’ organizations.

Nevin has been in the mix for managerial openings before, so he may land one eventually. As the top internal candidate, he’s the easiest fit for the Yankees to replace Boone in-season.

  1. The Yankee manager presents a problem First he is popular so this is not popular with the players to replace him yet as a manager he is awful. Reasons being his pitchers are left in much too long after being hammered and also he must be under the impression his players deserve to be on the field with averages that are pathetic. The hitting is terrible and fielding below par. Overpaid players Stanton who is out more then on the field. Sanchez probably the worse catcher the Yankees have ever had. Any player with lower then 200 should be considered a liability and the Yankees have many. My opinion fire Boone and replace Cashman. Steinbrenner would not have stood by with this faltering team but his son is different and much too patient.
