Astros bring back 2017 World Series hero on minor-league deal

The Houston Astros have re-signed former World Series hero Marwin Gonzalez. They’re getting the band back together.

Outside of Houston, any mention of the 2017 World Series champion Houston Astros is met with an asterisk. In Houston, it can land you a minor-league gig.

Marwin Gonzalez has failed to match those ’17 numbers since, but was able to parlay his Houston success into a couple contracts in Minnesota and Boston. His familiarity with the Astros system was enough to get a second chance in Houston.

Expect Gonzalez to get some work in the minors as he hasn’t played in a game since Aug. 12. But, eventually, he could be an asset off the bench in Houston.

Since 2020, Gonzalez has slashed just .206/.284/.300. No illegal replay system or trash cans can fix that.

Houston Astros hope to close season strong to win AL West

In what Carlos Correa has already admitted to be his final season as an Astro, Houston is among the World Series favorites out of the American League. This is all despite starting the season shorthanded, and being without Justin Verlander the entire season.

Bringing in Gonzalez does little harm. He hit .303/.377/.530 with 31 home runs in 2017, and a cheap prove-it deal allows him the opportunity to rebuild his swing in hopes of getting another major-league deal after this one.

Gonzalez is eligible for the postseason roster, as they signed him before Sept. 1. If Gonzalez works out, this could be a signing we look back on as an important one come this October.
