Boston Red Sox, MLB Postseason, New York Yankees, Seattle Mariners, Toronto Blue Jays

AL Wild Card standings if the season ended today

The American League Wild Card is the only postseason race that isn’t decided heading into the final days of the season. So, what could it look like?

If the season ended right now, there’d be some very disappointed fans in Seattle and elsewhere. But thankfully, this weekend offers several intriguing series that could change everything.

With the Yankees struggling at home against the Rays, the Red Sox on the road at Nationals Park, the Blue Jays facing a winnable home series and even the Mariners having a shot, we could see complete chaos.

With all that in mind, expect the standings to flip-flop several times down the stretch.

AL Wild Card standings update

As of this writing, the standings are as follows:

First Wild Card spot: Boston Red Sox (91-70)

Second Wild Card spot: New York Yankees (91-70)

Toronto Blue Jays (90-71) 1 game back

Seattle Mariners (89-71) 1.5 games back, yet to play Saturday

So, that’s a lot to digest.

The Yankees have picked a bad time to struggle, as they had just played extraordinarily well against the Red Sox and Blue Jays on the road. They returned home with a good luck charm in Bronxie the turtle, but their luck ran out against the Rays.

The Blue Jays and Mariners remain great storylines, but can they get over the hump? To do so, they’ll have to rely on the Rays and/or Nationals to win a game they shouldn’t.

Meanwhile, fans everywhere are shaking. October baseball, everyone.
