The San Diego Padres have reportedly hired Bob Melvin of the Oakland Athletics to be their new manager.
The San Diego Padres were in the market for a new manager after they parted ways with Jayce Tingler at the end of the 2021 campaign. Looking to hire someone who can help lead them to the postseason, the Padres have found their man.
According to A.J. Cassavell of MLB.com, the Padres have hired Bob Melvin of the Oakland Athletics to become their new manager. The Athletics allowed Melvin to interview for the job, and he now has a three-year deal with the NL West squad.

Back in June, the Athletics announced that they picked up his option to manage in the 2022 season. However, as mentioned earlier, the organization allowed him to interview with the Padres. Now, Oakland is in the market for a new manager.
After previously managing the Seattle Mariners (2003-04) and Arizona Diamondbacks (2005-09), the Athletics hired Melvin in 2011. With him in charge, Oakland had made it to the postseason six times, three of which by way of winning the AL West title (2012, 2013, 2020). Melvin won two Manager of the Year awards during his stint in Oakland (2012, 2018).
Overall, Melvin owns a 853-764 overall record with the Athletics.
The Padres were expected to be contenders in the National League this season, considering the huge moves they made this past winter. Instead, they finished the year with a 79-83 record and watched the rival Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants clinch playoff berths. That spelled the end of Tingler’s time in San Diego, despite it only being his second-year on the job.
With the loaded roster they have, the Padres wanted to find the right manager to help lead them to the World Series for the first time since 1998. They believe that Melvin is the right person for the job.
