MLB rumors: What’s the latest with Carlos Correa’s free agency?

Carlos Correa is arguably the most sought-after free agent of the 2021-22 class, but he has yet to make a decision. So, what’s the latest?

Correa slashed .279/.366/.485 with an .850 OPS in 2021, making him one of the best hitting shortstops in baseball. His ability to field his position and on the basepaths makes him a five-tool player, and only ups the asking price this offseason.

The former Houston Astro is expected to earn anywhere between $25 million-$30 million this offseason, which is a large chunk of change. He’s just 27 years old as of this writing, so a long-term contract is on the horizon.

Correa conveniently won his first Gold Glove just last week. He’s due far more than the Astros were willing to offer him, which is why he turned down their qualifying offer.

Carlos Correa Yankees rumors

Correa has been linked to the Yankees since midseason. New York has a hole at shortstop, and Aaron Boone doesn’t seem to mind that Correa insulted the manager’s former teammate Derek Jeter’s fielding ability just weeks ago, or that he took part in the Astros sign-stealing scandal.

Boone is past all of that, and praised Correa’s leadership ability and growth in that department.

The Yankees have the money to spend, but will they give in to Correa’s asking price?

Carlos Correa Tigers rumors

Correa is linked to the Tigers in part due to his connection with former Astros manager A.J. Hinch, who is now in Detroit. The two won a World Series together in Houston. Social media went wild when they incorrectly assumed that Correa added a Tiger emoji to his Twitter bio. Yet, it turned out to be a photoshop.

Carlos Correa rumors: Who else is interested?

The Astros remain in the mix, for now, despite the fact that Correa bypassed their qualifying offer. A reunion remains unlikely, but it’s still possible.

The Texas Rangers are another possible suitor, as they have a need at shortstop and payroll is looking to up payroll this offseason. Correa wouldn’t have to move far to Arlington.
