Matt Vierling’s epic face plant left a hole in the outfield (Video)

Matt Vierling of the Philadelphia Phillies went all out on a diving catch, as his face plant put a hole in the outfield.

When it comes to effort, no one gave more than Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Matt Vierling on July 9, 2022.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Cardinals outfielder Dylan Carlson hit a shallow fly ball to center field. Matt Vierling ran in and made an incredible diving catch to end the inning.

To say Vierling went all out is an understatement, as he face-planted on the catch and actually put a hole in the outfield!

Phillies: Matt Vierling face plants while making incredible diving catch

The game was scoreless all the way up until the top of the ninth inning. Philadelphia had two runners on base following a double by Darick Hall and a single by Didi Gregorius. That paved the way for Alec Bohm to hit a sacrifice fly to Tommy Edman in right field, allowing Hall to score to give the Phillies a late 1-0 lead.

Philadelphia closer Corey Knebel entered in the bottom of the ninth inning. Knebel walked Juan Yepez and saw Paul Goldschmidt reach on a fielder’s choice in his first two batters faced. But, Knebel was able to end the game by striking out Nolan Arenado, forcing Carlson to ground out, and getting Corey Dickerson to fly out.

Vierling absolutely deserves an “A+” for the effort on this catch.
