There have already been four managers that have been fired in MLB this year. There are five more that should be fired no later than the end of the season.
Every year, there are some MLB managers who either are fired or are on the hot seat. This year, there have already been four managers who have been fired during the season. They include Joe Maddon (Angels), Joe Girardi (Phillies), Charlie Montoyo (Blue Jays), and Chris Woodward (Rangers).
But either during the rest of this season or after this season, there will be more managers on their way out.
Here are five MLB managers who should be fired next by their respective clubs.
5 MLB managers who should be fired at the end of the season
1. White Sox manager Tony La Russa
More than any of the current 30 MLB managers, the Chicago White Sox need to fire Tony La Russa.
La Russa, 77, is already a Hall of Famer after he spent every single year from 1979 through 2011 as a manager. He managed the White Sox from mid-1979 through mid-1986, the Oakland A’s from mid-1986 through 1995, and the St. Louis Cardinals from 1996 through 2011.
He made it to the Hall of Fame after going 2728-2365 (.536 winning percentage). After being in managerial retirement for a decade, La Russa came back because he wanted to manage again and White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf wanted to make things right with La Russa. Reinsdorf said that firing La Russa in 1986 was the biggest mistake he ever made as the club’s owner … but things have not worked out.
La Russa has made numerous gaffes with the team, including intentionally walking hitters with a 1-2 count multiple times, apparently nodding off in the dugout, and many others. After winning 93 games in 2021, they are on pace for an 82-80 record.
If they fired him right now, the White Sox still could come back and win the easily winnable American League Central but that seems very unlikely to happen unless La Russa leaves on his own volition.
