The Toronto Blue Jays were shut out by the Seattle Mariners in Game 1 of the Wild Card Series. With one more loss, the Blue Jays’ season would reach its end, despite the season filled with high hopes and countless additions made to the roster throughout the year.

Toronto looked to be in good shape, as they held an 8-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. Yet somehow, the Blue Jays managed to blow the lead, and lost 10-9 to the Mariners. That’s right, the Seattle team that had not made it to the playoffs for over 20 years have advanced the the ALDS to face the Houston Astros.

Twitter reacts to Blue Jays epic loss to Mariners in postseason

Given the circumstances of their loss, the Blue Jays were the talk of Twitter. From Blue Jays fans tweeting throughout it, to other fanbases mocking them for not picking up a single win this postseason.

Toronto managed to take their lead in the second inning after a two-run homer by Teoscar Hernandez, then only built upon it until the fifth inning. But then, the Mariners were able to begin their comeback in the sixth inning after a wild pitch thrown by Tim Mayza. Then, Carlos Santana hit a three-run homer to cut Seattle’s deficit to 8-5.

The Blue Jays extended their lead on an RBI single by Danny Jansen in the seventh inning. The Mariners responded in the eighth with an RBI single by Cal Raleigh and a three-run double by J.P. Crawford to tie things up.

In the ninth, the Mariners officially took the lead on an RBI double by Adam Frazier.

Seattle’s George Kirby closed things out, as he forced a flyout by Raimel Tapia to secure the win and clinch the series.

The Blue Jays are now the second AL East team to be eliminated from the postseason on Saturday. The Tampa Bay Rays lost 1-0 to the Cleveland Guardians in the 15th inning on a solo home run by Oscar Gonzalez.

This is not what Toronto sports fans needed to deal with. They have the Maple Leafs to deal with, as they have had postseason struggles caused by blown leads. Now, the Blue Jays have provided them with a seven-run blown lead.
