Shortstop Carlos Correa provided an update on his status with the Minnesota Twins and potentially hitting free agency with the season over.
The Minnesota Twins‘ season has officially ended, as they finished third in the AL Central and missed out on a postseason berth. With that, what the team does this offseason will be monitored. Perhaps the biggest story of the Twins’ offseason will be whether they can retain shortstop Carlos Correa.
While speaking with the media on Wednesday, Correa said that while he does love Minnesota, he stresses that he does want long-term security. Correa’s quote can be found below, courtesy of Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com.

“The decision, it’s very simple. I’m going to have some conversations with the front office here and see where their headspace is at and where they’re at in term of, I talked about marriage in terms of building a long-term relationship and then we go from there,” said Correa, via Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com. “But we all know, you know the game enough to know what my decision is going to be like. And I love this team. I love this organization. My wife loves it here, loves it in Minnesota. Loves all the wives. She is very happy there. My wife’s happiness is my happiness. If everything is good at home, then it reflects on the field. So obviously, that’s something that I take dearly into consideration.
“But at the same time, I want to make sure that my son and my family are taken care of. Hopefully, the Twins can see the player that I am, the person that I am, the passion that I have for this game and the love that I have for this game. And we can get into some serious conversations.
This is not the first time that Correa has discussed a potential new deal with the Twins or another team. Not too long ago, Correa made a comparison to shopping in a Dior store, saying “I’m the product here, and if they want my product, they’ve just got to come get it.”
Correa signed a three-year, $105.3 million contract with the Twins this past offseason. The deal was unique, as it contained opt-out clauses after the 2022 and 2023 seasons. Correa had a strong year with the Twins, and he could potentially cash in.
This season, Correa recorded a .291 batting average, a .366 on-base percentage, a .467 slugging percentage, 22 home runs, 64 RBI, 70 runs scored, and 152 hits through 136 games.
If Correa is to opt-out, he would join Trea Turner, Dansby Swanson, and potentially Xander Bogaert (if he opts out of his deal with the Boston Red Sox) as the top shortstops available in free agency.
It will be interesting to see how negotiations between Correa and the Twins go this offseason.
