Red Sox spring training: Justin Turner taken to hospital after scary HBP

Justin Turner’s latest injury update isn’t good news, as he was taken to the hospital after being hit by a pitch at Red Sox spring training.

Boston signed Justin Turner this offseason with the hope he could turn into a stable veteran, much like they had in J.D. Martinez, who ironically swapped places with his bearded counterpart with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Turner’s had a lovely start at Red Sox spring training, getting to know his teammates who express admiration for all he’s done to earn his spot in the majors for so long. However, that all came to a stop on Monday, as Turner was hit by a pitch in the face.

Turner was able to walk off the field, but per the team he was taken to the hospital.

Per NESN reporter Jahmai Webster, “Justin Turner was taken to a local hospital for further evaluation after being hit in the face by a pitch. He’s receiving treatment for soft tissue injuries, and is being monitored for a concussion. He’s stable, alert, and in good spirits given the circumstance the Red Sox say.”

Red Sox spring training: How long will Justin Turner be out?

Boston has no need to rush Justin Turner back, as he’s 38 years old and could surely pick up a bat at any time if need be. Tigers pitcher Matt Manning, who hit Turner, apologized after the incident.

“Just a complete accident,” Manning said, per NESN. “The ball got away from me. I got a swing and miss on a ball up in the zone and tried to go back to it. It got away from me. I definitely want to apologize to him and let him know it wasn’t intentional.”

Alex Cora said that Turner was in good spirits after the game, which is a relief given the extend of the injury.
