Trades this late into the preseason are uncommon yet it’s a topic fans are constantly thinking about. This week’s MLB Power Rankings take advantage of our inner desire for change. All of us have already found some targets for our ball clubs to consider more seriously at the trade deadline.
In order to get something back, your team will have to give up a little bit. Whether buying or selling, every team has something to offer.
Taking into account what the team is expected to do, who they should keep, and the overall scope of how near or far the World Series is, these are the best trade assets from every ball club.
30) MLB Power Rankings: Oakland Athletics, Seth Brown
There isn’t much left for the Oakland Athletics to trade away. Seth Brown is one of the last remaining veterans. A lefty who has shown he can hit for power, Brown is one of those players we should expect teams looking for a part-time bat to seek out. He might work well in a platoon or on a playoff roster as a slugger who can come off the bench.
29) MLB Power Rankings: Cincinnati Reds, Wil Myers
There wasn’t much interest in Wil Myers this offseason which led him to sign a one-year deal with the Cincinnati Reds. The Reds have overhauled their roster in a major way over the last two years. The rebuild is in full effect. Myers will have a chance to rebuild his stock in Cincinnati. A trade this summer feels inevitable. The Reds shouldn’t even think about trading any of their young players.
28) MLB Power Rankings: Baltimore Orioles, Adam Frazier
Another club with no real urgency to trade away youngsters, the Baltimore Orioles have some great trade assets in theory, but why sell any potential piece of the future? Utility man Adam Frazier found his way to Baltimore this offseason the same way Myers did in Cincinnati. He won’t net the Orioles a major addition to their farm system. Someone should be eager to take a flier on him when the bench becomes depleted.
27) MLB Power Rankings: Washington Nationals, Trevor Williams
Not much remains on the Washington Nationals roster in need of subtraction aside from the contracts of Patrick Corbin and Stephen Strasburg. In terms of players, Trevor Williams is an intriguing trade asset for the club. He just signed this offseason for a chance to start games on a team in some desperate need of innings. As a starter or reliever, he’ll be on the wish list for many ball clubs.
26) MLB Power Rankings: Colorado Rockies, Daniel Bard
The Colorado Rockies might have a field day this summer. A bunch of their hitters are on expiring contracts. However, it’s closer Daniel Bard who is their best trade asset. Finding good help in the ninth inning isn’t easy. Although signed for two seasons, the Rockies shouldn’t hesitate to move him. They’re not winning the World Series this year or next.
