2023 NL Cy Young odds and prediction: Sandy Alcantara favored to repeat

The 2022 National League Cy Young winner, Sandy Alcantara is favored to repeat in 2023, but is he worth a bet at +450?

The 2023 NL Cy Young odds are crowded with Alcantara entering the season as the favorite, but Brewers ace Corbin Burnes is right behind him in addition to the pair of New York Mets’ aces Max Scherzer and reigning AL Cy Young winner Justin Verlander.

There’s plenty of options in this market, such as NL Rookie of the Year runner up Spencer Strider of the Braves and his teammate, Max Fried. What about two other studs in the vaunted NL East, Zack Wheeler and Aaron Nola? All four pitchers +1200 or shorter heading into the season.

2023 National League Cy Young prediction

There is a ton of talent in the league at pitcher, but I find Yu Darvish criminally underpriced at +2500. For starters, he’s entering the season as the clear cut ace in San Diego after Joe Musgrove broke his toe last month and will miss the start of the season.

He is fresh off a stellar campaign in which he posted an ERA of 3.13 and a FIP less than a half run greater, indicating that he was pretty steady and didn’t receive a ton of help from his teammates in the field. He was top 10 in strikeouts per nine innings in the NL and also innings pitched.

The Padres made a surprise run to the NLCS last season and continued to build around the core of Manny Machado and Juan Soto by signing Xander Bogaerts, only helping the upside of the Padres roster. If the team is able to best the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West, the team will need a complete effort and Darvish headlines the pitching staff.

It also helps that Darvish has been healthy for most of his career. In four of his last five full seasons he has started 30 games.

There’s plenty of names around 10-1, but I’d rather look down the board at someone like Darvish who has a ton going for him heading into 2023.
