Players are also engaging in talks with teams about contract extensions, with one team source suggesting that it could be a “busy” stretch between now and first pitch on Thursday afternoon.
Two contract extensions have gotten done, with Miles Mikolas and the St. Louis Cardinals being the first. The second is second baseman Andres Gimenez and the Cleveland Guardians, who agreed to a massive seven-year, $106.5 million contract extension on Tuesday morning. The deal is still pending a physical.

Miles Mikolas Cardinals contract: Details on St. Louis’ extension for SP
Right-hander Miles Mikolas and the St. Louis Cardinals agreed to a three-year, $55.75 million contract, according to sources familiar with the deal. It replaces his previous contract that was supposed to pay him $15.75 million in 2023.
Here’s a full breakdown of the contract, via major-league sources:
- Signing bonus: $5 million
- 2023: $18.75 million
- 2024: $16 million
- 2025: $16 million
Mikolas, 34, is coming off a resurgent 2022 season in which he posted a 3.29 ERA and 153/39 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 202.1 innings. He made the All-Star team and put together a season strong enough in which the organization was confident the veteran right-hander could head their rotation for the next three seasons.
