Aaron Boone has an easy solution for his hot seat: Don’t manage games

Aaron Boone has faced criticism for his uneven performance in the dugout, but the Yankees manager continues to stand up for his players — and exit games early.

The New York Yankees are 30-22, riding a strong wave of positive momentum and solidifying their place in the American League contenders circle. Even so, manager Aaron Boone has faced his share of criticism during the 2023 season. Such is life when you’re in charge of baseball’s most storied franchise.

Boone will never elevate above criticism in New York, but he appears to have found a unique plan to avoid the hot seat: not managing games.

Whatever problems the fanbase may have with Boone’s lineup choices or decision-making, there is one universal truth that cannot be denied. Boone cares about his players and he’s willing to fight for his players.

Yankees managed Aaron Boone gets ejected from the game… again

Boone was tossed from Thursday’s loss to Baltimore for arguing balls and strikes with home plate umpire Edwin Moscoso, who claims Boone spit in his face. That said, the Yankees’ manager is unlikely to face a suspension or further discipline. There’s no evidence the spitting was intentional.

This marks the 30th ejection of Boone’s tenure with the Yankees. He took over the head job in 2018. No coach has been tossed more during that time span.

For Boone, there’s merit in fighting so hard for your players. Clarke Schmidt, the young Yankees starter on the mound Thursday night, battled an inconsistent strike zone — the source of Boone’s frustration. After the game, he made sure to seek out his manager to offer thanks:

“We’re going to war out there. All players, we’re fighting tooth and nail out there. So to see your manager out there fighting tooth and nail for you as well is a good feeling. I know he’s always gonna have our backs, and you saw that tonight.” (via SNY)

Per SNY’s Andy Martino, the Yankees’ brass does not have issues with Boone’s frequent ejections. He has the support of management and his players, which should toss cold water on any real speculation about his future with the team.

New York started the season slower out of the gates than expected, but the Yankees are making up ground in the MLB’s toughest division. By season’s end, don’t be surprised if the Yanks are right in the thick of World Series contention.
