The Boston Red Sox just recorded an impressive sweep over the New York Yankees and fans are trolling the heck out of Gerrit Cole.
Talk about a complete and total weekend to forget for the New York Yankees. The team traveled to Fenway Park in hopes of making a statement against their arch rivals the Boston Red Sox, but instead they suffered a road sweep.
To make things worse for them on Sunday, Gerrit Cole was on the mound and he struggled. As you might have been able to guess, Red Sox fans have been all over Twitter blasting Cole and New York for the rough showing.
Gerrit Cole is getting savaged all over Twitter after Sunday’s loss to Boston
On the day, Cole, one of the best hurlers in the game, lasted only five innings. In the defeat, the righty gave up eight hits and five earned runs. It goes without saying, but this wasn’t the kind of showing New York supporters were hoping to see out of him.
As you can see from those tweets above, Cole really is getting ripped apart on Twitter. There’s countless more posts where folks really are letting him have it. Boston made him look like an average player on Sunday instead of an All-Star pitcher.
Cole was checked twice too for foreign substances, which really had to be insulting for him. At the end of the day, Boston lit up Cole and now fans are trying to get in his head on social media. Following this sweep, New York is now 40-37 on the season and in fourth place of the AL East standings. Boston on the other hand is in first place of the division, which of course makes this weekend’s result even more sweet for them.
