The New York Mets are leaning toward shutting down Jacob deFrom for the rest of the season and it’d be a major blow for the club.
The up-and-down season for Jacob deGrom continues, only it looks like things somehow have gotten worse. For the former Cy Young winner, deGrom has been battling injuries throughout the year. Lately, it has been his elbow that’s been giving him issues and kept him off the hill.
Have we seen him on the bump for the last time this campaign? According to Sports Illustrated’s Pat Ragazzo, the Mets are currently leaning toward shutting down deGrom for the rest of the season. This would of course be awful for the NL East side.
Losing Jacob deGrom for the rest of the season would be terrible for the Mets
With deGrom suffering setback after setback, the Mets may ultimately make the tough but necessary decision to just have him rest up for the rest of the year and turn his focus to 2022. Before being placed on the Injured List this most recent time, deGrom had been nothing short of sensational.
On the year, deGrom was 7-2 in 15 starts with a 1.08 ERA. Those stats are simply head-turning. Had he not been dealing with all these injuries, he very well could have been on his way to another Cy Young-winning campaign.
While the Mets have been in the hunt to win the NL East throughout the year, they’re now 4.5 games back of the division-leading Braves. The Phillies are only 2.5 games back of Atlanta as well.
In order for the Mets to be serious players to win the NL East, they’ll need to be fully healthy come September. If deGrom indeed is shut down, things are only going to get more complicated for New York. All eyes will be on deGrom in the coming weeks.
