It wouldn’t be Atlanta sports without a Braves fan blowing a seemingly insurmountable lead to The Freeze at Truist Park.
Forgive the Super Bowl pun, Atlanta. It had to be done.
Watch the unfortunate Braves fan who snatched defeat from the jaws of victory in a Beat the Freeze race:
The guy was literally just a few strides away from the finish line. He had it right there. He totally blew it.
It’s almost like the power went out and he forgot how to put one foot in front of the other. His face met the dirt as a result. The close-up is almost as painful as it is funny.
What a way to lose.
Braves fans epitomize Atlanta sports fandom in Beat The Freeze races
What is “Beat The Freeze”? It’s one of the best between innings gags in baseball featuring a former collegiate sprinter who once ran the 100m dash in 10.47 seconds.
A fan is given a headstart running from foul pole to foul pole along the warning track. That’s a full 160 meters to try to outrun The Freeze.
It doesn’t go well for fans usually. That’s because The Freeze is quite fast, but also because that’s a long way to run if you’re not ready for it. You might be feel good in the first half, but by the end your legs are definitely hurting.
There have been worse fails running against The Freeze. Back in 2017, a fan started celebrating prematurely tumbled as he was overtaken. That one had particularly terrible timing since it wasn’t so long after the Falcons blew their lead in the Super Bowl. The wound was still very fresh at the time.
Both races epitomize the struggle of being an Atlanta sports fan.
