The St. Louis Cardinals have caught on fire at the right time, as they have clinched their longest winning streak in 20 years.
At the MLB trade deadline, the St. Louis Cardinals did not look like a postseason-worthy team, considering they were near .500 at the time. While the division title was out of the question due to the success of the Milwaukee Brewers, the Cardinals have flown up the National League standings lately. Now, the Cardinals have a comfortable lead in the Wild Card standings.
On Tuesday night, the Cardinals defeated the rival Brewers 2-1 to win their 10th game in a row. According to MLB Stats, this is St. Louis’ longest winning streak since their 11-game stretch of victories back in August of 2001!

The Cardinals called upon Jake Woodford on Tuesday night to get the win over their division rival. In five innings of work, Woodford struck out five batters while allowing zero runs on two hits in the win. St. Louis’ offense came on a sacrifice fly by outfielder Tyler O’Neill in the first inning and an RBI single by second baseman Tommy Edman in the eighth.
With the Brewers cutting their deficit to 2-1 thanks to a sacrifice fly by shortstop Willy Adames in the bottom of the eighth, reliever Giovanny Gallegos got the save despite walking two batters (one intentional to Christian Yelich) and allowing a single by outfielder Avisail Garcia. The win wsa clinched after Gallegos struck out pinch-hitter Pablo Reyes.
After this victory, the Cardinals now have a four-game cushion over the Cincinnati Reds for the final Wild Card berth in the NL. St. Louis is on a hot streak right now, and they could very well match the 11-wins in a row from the 2001 season with another victory over the Brewers on Wednesday.
