The Giants and Dodgers’ NL West battle has been a downright slugfest all year long, as the teams with the two best records in baseball fight for the division crown.
The Giants were the first team in MLB to 100 wins, but that wasn’t even enough to secure their own division — at least not yet. A team full of veterans knows never to let up, and you can expect the Giants to see this one through til the end.
San Francisco would love to cap off a tremendous regular season with an NL West crown, which is something virtually no pundit saw coming at the beginning of the year. The Dodgers and San Diego Padres dominated NL West rankings in spring training.
The Giants are used to being overlooked. As the likely No. 1 seed in the National League postseason, the Dodgers and/or Cardinals will be out to prove they’re pretenders come playoff time.
San Francisco Giants magic number: 9
The Giants have already clinched a playoff spot. In fact, that’s been a certainty for some time now. The Dodgers are just a game behind San Francisco in the West standings, however.
So, what is a magic number? FanSided’s Aryanna Prasad explains it al better than I could:
“While their odds are rather solid, their magic number remains 9. The magic number is calculated by taking an entire season of games, then adding one for a total of 163. Then, the wins of the Giants are subtracted, as are the losses of the secondary team.
The formula looks like this:
163 – (Division leader wins + Division runner-up losses)”
The Giants’ impressive season has one more accolade to secure — division champs.
