After the 2021 season ended in heartbreaking fashion for the St. Louis Cardinals, the front office needs to be busy this offseason to chase a title next fall.
It just wasn’t meant to be for the St. Louis Cardinals. On Wednesday night, the NL Central club took on the Los Angeles Dodgers in hopes of recording an upset win, but Chris Taylor had other ideas, ripping a walk-off homer to light up Dodger Stadium.
With that one swing of the lumber, the Cards’ campaign came to an end. With that said, this team clearly has what it takes to be major players in the years to come and there’s no reason they can’t make serious noise in the playoffs next year. Three players in particular could help that get done. In this piece, we take a look at three free agents the club should pursue. The list of course includes Trevor Story.
3. Trevor Story
Could we potentially see a reunion for Nolan Arenado and his former Colorado teammate Trevor Story for the infield? Story is out of contract with the Rockies and while he hasn’t ruled out a reunion with his current team for next season, you’ve got to figure he’s tired of all the losing.
Colorado recorded another year to forget in 2021, as they finished in fourth place of the NL West standings with their 74-87 record. Time and time again this club disappoints, which has been frustrating to see for the folks over in the Mile High City.
Story is of course going to have plenty of suitors in free agency. Not only is he an outstanding hitter, but he’s also got a fantastic glove working over at shortstop. The thought alone of having him and Arenado playing next to each other again in the infield should bring a smile to Cards’ fans’ faces.
This past season, Story hit .251, with 24 homers and 75 RBI. Again, he’s going to have plenty of folks after him, while Colorado is ready to try and convince him to stay around as well. At the end of the day, a move to St. Louis would be huge for both sides. We’ll see if something can get done here.
