The Chicago Cubs have finally found a general manager to lead them into the future, tapping Cleveland’s Carter Hawkins for the role.
Coming up on a full year without a dedicated general manager, the Chicago Cubs have made their selection.
According to multiple reports on Wednesday afternoon, Chicago is set to hire Carter Hawkins to fill Jed Hoyer’s former role.
If you’re unfamiliar with Hawkins, you’re not alone. We’re here to help you get to know the man now in charger of the Cubs.
New Cubs GM: Who is Carter Hawkins?
Hawkins was the assistant general manager for Cleveland, where he has spent the majority of his years in baseball.
He was hired as an advance scouting intern in 2008 and moved his way up into scouting, then player development. He took over as Director of Player Development in 2014 before getting a promotion to assistant GM in 2016.
The former catcher played baseball for Vanderbilt.
Why did the Cubs hire Carter Hawkins?
Hawkins’ background in scouting and player development is telling. He’ll help the franchise focus on a rebuild after offloading their championship core this summer.
What happened to Jed Hoyer and Theo Epstein?
The job was available to Hawkins because Theo Epstein stepped down as president of baseball operations and the Cubs promoted former GM Jed Hoyer into his role in November last year. The team went through the 2021 season without an official general manager in place.
Now they can move forward with a vision towards developing talent and eventually build the team back into a title contender.
The biggest question Hawkins needs to answer is how long that process will take.
