Red Sox legend Luis Tiant shares heartbreaking message after passing of Jim Corsi

Boston Red Sox Luis Tiant shared emotional Instagram post regarding the passing of Jim Corsi.

The Boston Red Sox fanbase received sad news on Tuesday. Former relief pitcher Jim Corsi passed away at the age of 60 after battles with liver and colon cancer. The news came days after the airing of his emotional interview with channel WBZ in Boston.

Tributes rolled in after the news was shared, and one person to do so was legendary Red Sox pitcher Luis Tiant who shared an emotional message on Instagram. Tiant says that although they were never teammates they “were part of the Red Sox family.”

Red Sox: Luis Tiant pays tribute to Jim Corsi

The Red Sox released an official press release regarding Corsi’s passing. Team president and CEO Sam Kennedy shared the following statement, via the team’s official website:

“We were saddened to hear of Jim’s passing after his courageous battle with cancer,” said Red Sox President & CEO Sam Kennedy. “Jim’s heart was so big and full of love that his legacy goes far beyond his playing career and World Series Championship. The affection he showed his family, this region, and every fan he encountered was incomparable. For me and so many others, he was the embodiment of that childhood dream to someday play for the hometown team. We were lucky to have had him as part of our Red Sox family, and extend our deepest condolences to his children, and all who knew and loved him. We lost a great one today.”

Corsi, who was a Newton, Mass. native, signed with Boston back in 1997. In his three seasons wearing a Red Sox uniform, Corsi recorded a 3.35 ERA, a 1.386 WHIP, a 9-7 record, 103 strikeouts and two saves in 147.2 innings of work.

Prior to his tenure in Boston, Corsi began his career with the Oakland Athletics. From there, he spent the remainder of his 10-year career with the Houston Astros, Florida Marlins and Baltimore Orioles. In total, Corsi recorded a 3.25 ERA, 290 strikeouts over 481.1 innings.
