During the second half of the season, the minor leagues will be moving second base inward and baseball fans are excited about it.
Could more changes be coming to Major League Baseball down the road? This could be the case in terms of second base moving, but first, people are going to see how things go in the minors in 2022.
According to The Athletic, the minors will be moving second base inward, making it 13.5 inches closer to both first base and third base. This change will start in the second half of the season, per insider Jayson Stark.
Moving second base inward could lead to more steal attempts
It goes without saying, but moving second base inward could lead to more exciting plays being on the way. With this, the expectation is that we could see more steal attempts, while runners could use this as an advantage to try and turn a long single into a double too.
At this point, it’s going to be an experiment at first, with the minors taking charge here to see how things go. If the results are promising, however, and there are no complaints from players or managers on the decision, we really could see the bigs making the change too.
With Opening Day right around the corner and teams wrapping up spring training, the excitement for the 2022 campaign is through the roof. Come this summer, baseball fans will surely pay attention to this second base change in the minors to see if it’s universally accepted or hated.
