Carlos Rodon contract details: San Francisco Giants add to rotation in big way

The San Francisco Giants have signed free agent starting pitcher Carlos Rodon to a contract. Rodon had a stellar season with the White Sox last year.

Rodon has a checkered injury history, but his medicals came back clean after the lockout, prompting plenty of interest from teams across MLB. The Giants, of course, were in that mix.

In the end, it’s the San Francisco Giants signing Rodon to a two-year contract. The deal makes sense for both sides, as it’s not significant risk for the Giants, but also allows Rodon to make plenty of capital in the short-term.

Per ESPN’s Jeff Passan, Rodon is set to earn $44 million over the course of his two-year contract.

Carlos Rodon injury history

Rodon had three stints on the 60-day injured list over the span of three seasons. In 2018, he had left shoulder surgery, while in 2019 and 2020 Rodon suffered elbow injuries, which can be devastating for most pitchers.

In the 2021 season, however, Rodon bounced back in a big way. The then-White Sox starter put up great numbers on the South Side of Chicago, pitching to a 13-5 record, paired with a 2.37 ERA and .96 WHIP.

If Rodon can mirror those numbers next season, surely the Giants will agree they made a worthwhile investment.

San Francisco Giants starting rotation

The Giants starting rotation was a big reason they won a league-high 107 games last year. Their team, like most contenders, is built through pitching, and Rodon should expect to throw near the top of the starting rotation.

Even without the steady services of veteran Johnny Cueto, the Giants have one of the best rotations in the National League thanks to the signing of Rodon.
