Some rough news has come in for the Milwaukee Brewers leading up to Opening Day, as catcher Pedro Severino has been suspended for half the season.
The Milwaukee Brewers are all set to star the campaign on Thursday against the Chicago Cubs, but a major headache has already arrived for the club. That’s because catcher Pedro Severino won’t be able to suit up for quite some time.
According to FanSided’s Robert Murray, Severino has been suspended for the next 80 games due to testing positive for a banned substance. This new has got to hurt for skipper Craig Counsell.
Pedro Severino tested positive for Clomiphene
Per Murray, Severino tested positive for Clomiphene, which is on the banned list. Because of this, he’ll miss a little less than half the campaign. Severino, a veteran backstop, is entering his eighth year in the bigs.
He spent the first four years of his career with the Nationals and then spent three seasons in Baltimore with the Orioles. Last season with the O’s, Severino hit .248 with 11 homers and 46 RBI in 113 games played.
This offseason, Severino agreed to a one-year deal with the Brewers for $1.9 million. The news of him testing positive for PEDs and being suspended for 80 games has surprised so many fans out there. They weren’t expecting this from Severino, especially so close to Opening Day.
Against the Cubs, Milwaukee won’t have the catcher available. It’s something the team will have to get used to for a little while, but Severino will be back later in the campaign to try and help the club out. Milwaukee is coming off a NL Central-winning season in 2021, as the team won the division with its 95-67 record. They have high expectations entering 2022 as well.
