The Oakland Athletics continue to ship their best players elsewhere this offseason. This time, the San Diego Padres snagged Sean Manaea.
Per Mark Feinsand, the Athletics are dealing Manaea to the Padres, a team that could use some pitching depth considering lingering injuries to the likes of Mike Clevinger. San Diego intends to contend this season, while Oakland does not. Sometimes it’s that simple.
San Diego has been active in trade talks lately, as just Saturday the Padres tried shipping Eric Hosmer’s contract to the Mets.
The A’s still have the likes of Frankie Montas, who could be an intriguing trade target come the deadline.
Sean Manaea trade details: Padres
As of now, all we know is that the Padres will be sending two prospects back in return.
Angeles is the Padres’ No. 12 prospect per MLB Pipeline, while Martinez is No. 26.
Sean Manaea contract
Manaea, 30, is on a one-year, $9.75 million contract, which is evidently too rich for the A’s. Add in that he’s up for a new deal next offseason, and you can see why Oakland would want to get what they can for him now.
Sean Manaea stats
In 2021, Manaea had an 11-10 record with a 3.91 ERA and a 1.227 WHIP. In San Diego, he translates to a middle of the rotation starter when the likes of Yu Darvish, Mike Clevinger and Blake Snell are all healthy.
For now, though, he provides pitching depth to a team which desperately needs it.
