MLB Twitter was in disbelief over the Rays vs. Red Sox game featuring nine innings of no-hit baseball, a blown no-hitter and a walk-off victory.
The swing of emotion for Tampa Bay Rays fans on Saturday night was a doozy as their team no-hit the Red Sox through nine innings…then blew it…then walked off a victory.
Six pitchers combined to hold Boston without a hit but the Rays couldn’t get their own bats going and failed to score in the first nine innings.
The game went into the 10th with a chance of Tampa Bay pulling off a rare 10-inning no-hitter. However, hopes of that went away pretty quickly. Matt Wisler came in and gave up a triple to Bobby Dalbec, the first batter he faced.
By the time the game went to the bottom of the 10th, the Rays trailed 2-0.
Miraculously, Tampa Bay dug themselves out of that hole when Taylor Walls reached on a throwing error and Kevin Kiermaier won the game with a blast into the right-field seats.
Twitter went bonkers.
MLB Twitter couldn’t believe the blown Rays no-hitter, walk-off
The last time a team maintained a no-hitter through the 10th inning was in 1997. It’s happened four times in MLB history.
The Rays couldn’t quite get there but they got the win over a division rival, which is ultimately what they needed from the night. The fireworks didn’t come in a particularly predictable way, but that’s what’s fun about sports. Anything can happen at any time, and just when you blow a no-hitter you might still have some walk-off magic.
