Watch: George Springer makes early catch of the year candidate to rob Red Sox

The Red Sox had to think they had an extra-base hit in a tight game against the Blue Jays until George Springer came up with a catch-of-the-year candidate.

Boston Red Sox fans have been waiting for the offense to get off the ground throughout the majority of the opening month of the 2022 MLB season and hoped that they could do that on Monday evening in Toronto as they took on the Blue Jays.

Making good contact throughout the night, it seemed as if Boston was on the verge of making some big noise. Kevin Plawecki stepped up to the dish with two outs in the top of the fifth inning and looked to really get it going. The catcher laced a ball into left-centerfield and surely had to think he had an easy double.

Instead, George Springer got on his horse and made an absolutely ridiculous catch to sit Plawecki and the Red Sox down with the final out of the inning.

Slowed down and from a different view, you can see even better what an unreal grab Springer made.

Springer’s grab was also crucial in a game that was largely a pitchers duel. A pair of solo home runs from the Blue Jays were the only runs on the board through seven innings and there had only been seven total hits from both teams combined to that point.

Suffice it to say, an extra-base hit in that moment could’ve been costly for Toronto. Thankfully for Jays fans, Springer was ready to make a highlight for the ages.
