The Boston Red Sox have a very talented group of prospects. Who should be called up to the big leagues next?
The Boston Red Sox have not had the start to the season that many fans expected, but their 2022 campaign is just getting started. Sitting at five games below .500, one has to ask themselves if the time is right for some of the team’s talented prospects to make their major league debuts?
Boston has a very talented group of players down on the farm, and several have already reached the Triple-A level. Might it be time to promote some of these young prospects to the major league roster? Let’s look at three Red Sox prospects who should be on the shortlist.
3. Red Sox prospect Josh Winckowski should be called up next.
Josh Winckowski should be one of the next Red Sox prospects to make his major league debut. The 23-year-old was traded twice during the first month of the 2021 season and eventually landed in Boston when the Red Sox shipped Andrew Benintendi to Kansas City.
Winckowski has started off well at Triple-A Worcester this season. The right-hander has started three games and owns a modest 3.55 ERA. The 23-year-old has not thrown as many strikes as you’d like to see but that’s never been Winckowski’s best attribute.
The question that oftentimes arrises with Josh Winckowski is whether or not he’s a reliever or a starter. If he’s unable to hone that third offering, a spot in the Red Sox bullpen is likely reserved for him.
However, if Winckowski can continue to develop that splitter/ changeup, there’s a chance he could land in the Red Sox starting rotation. Nick Pivetta has looked awful in the early-going and might not survive much longer as a member of Boston’s starting rotation.
