New York Mets manager Buck Showalter addressed the possibility of losing the NL East division to the Atlanta Braves, and he takes accountability.
The New York Mets are fairly likely to lose the NL East division to the defending World Series champions, the Atlanta Braves.
Mets manager Buck Showalter shared his thoughts on the possibility and stated, “It’s there for us. It’s all there for us. We control it. That would be frustrating if we didn’t. It’s the old thing that we’ve been talking about all year. It’s called, ‘Play Better’.”
He took accountability for the fact that it’s up to the team to come out on top, especially as one of the best teams in the league throughout this season. The Mets, however, are clinging on hard and need to play their best through the rest of the season if they want to dethrone the defending champions.
The Mets have potential to end up on top, but they need to utilize it
The Mets are one of the most well-rounded teams in the league, and unless they completely tank in the final stretch of the season, they’re almost guaranteed postseason success.
According to FanGraphs, the Mets have a 100 percent chance of making the playoffs and a 16.7 percent chance of winning the World Series, which is the highest projected winning percentage. New York has several talented players with a solid rotation, especially with ace Jacob deGrom back into the mix after a hiatus slightly over a year long.
New York has missed the playoffs for the past five consecutive seasons, so making it this season would be a huge feat. They’ve also only won two World Series in franchise history, the most recent being 1986. They appeared in the World Series in 2000 and 2015 but lost each time.
This would certainly be an exciting series of events if the Mets can pull off another World Series season, but it’s up to them to perform up to the standards.
