We can already expect the Chicago Cubs to target Carlos Correa and these other three monster MLB free agents this offseason.
Chicago Cubs fans are hopeful their 2022 season was only a temporary layoff from competing. The luxury tax has been reset, the team has undergone a light rebuild, and next up on the list of things the front office needs to do is spend on some big-name free agents.
The Cubs should be one of baseball’s more active teams that never stood a chance this past season. It’s great news for the diehard fans who only got a taste of what lies ahead when the team went out and sign Seiya Suzuki and Marcus Stroman last winter.
There are some monster free-agent targets we can expect the Cubs to go after. It begins with Carlos Correa.
4. Monster Cubs free agent target: Carlos Correa
Carlos Correa settled on a high AAV deal with the Minnesota Twins for the 2022 season. It included plenty of opportunities to opt out and he’s expected to flex his options officially as soon as he can.
Correa didn’t have a spectacularly awesome 2022 season. He still seemed to be worth the investment. Minnesota’s bigger problem was they didn’t quite have enough around him even after an aggressive trade deadline.
The Cubs were already a potential landing spot for Correa last offseason. Instead, their shortstop plan included signing Andrelton Simmons and Jonathan Villar. Both were designated for assignment before the season was over. Do the Cubs look to make a bigger splash at the position this winter?
Free agency will offer the Cubs an abundance of shortstop options. Do they put their faith in Nico Hoerner or go after a surer thing? Correa and a few others at shortstop and other positions are sitting out there waiting to find out.
