The Houston Astros won the Yankees-Guardians rainout, if only because of the extra rest time.
MLB made Yankees and Guardians fans sweat it out on Monday night while we awaited word on a rain delay. While most amateur meteorologists could have told the governing authorities of MLB that playing any game in these conditions would be dangerous, we had to wait nearly three hours for the official word.
Game 5 between the Yankees and Guardians will be played on Tuesday afternoon at 4 p.m. ET. It’s unclear if the pitching matchup will remain the same.
The real winners of Monday night’s game getting washed are, of course, the Houston Astros.
Why the Astros won the ALDS rainout
The winner of the Cleveland-New York series will have less than a day to prepare for the ALCS, and will have to fly to Houston in the process. That is ROUGH, to say the least.
The Astros have the best World Series odds of any team remaining in the postseason by a longshot. They had the best record in the American League, and swept the Seattle Mariners over the weekend.
Even after an essential first-round bye through the Wild Card round, the Astros will now receive another three days of rest thanks to some unlucky weather in the Bronx.
What will Houston do with their added time off? Well, why not enjoy the sun, or line up your pitching matchups?
The Astros ace, Justin Verlander, will be waiting for either the Yankees or Guardians on Wednesday. Behind him, the likes of Lance McCullers and more are well rested, too. Meanwhile, both New York and Cleveland are expected to exhaust their bullpen options in an elimination game. Aaron Boone all but confirmed that in his pregame comments Monday:
From Houston’s perspective, the more the merrier.
