The Philadelphia Phillies are on fire kicking off the NLCS with two home runs — one by Bryce Harper and another by Kyle Schwarber. Harper had the perfect reaction to Schwarber’s homer, and it’s one most viewers probably had as well.
Harper was speechless, with his jaw dropped, exactly as he should’ve been. Schwarber’s 488-foot home run was absolutely beautiful and reached the second deck at Petco Park.
The San Diego Padres players and coach Bob Melvin looked a bit disappointed as it made the score 2-0, and it’ll definitely be interesting to watch how this series plays out between the two remaining teams in the National League.
Should Phillies be favored to defeat the Padres?
Both the Phillies and the Padres took down teams that were expected to be in the NLCS. The Phillies crushed the defending World Series champions, the Atlanta Braves and the Padres defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers, who they hadn’t won a series against all season.
Philadelphia, however, had more impactful performance overall. In particular, they produced an incredible third inning during Game 3 of the NLDS. They scored six runs in the third inning alone with Bryson Stott, Michael Harris II, Bryce Harper and Nick Castellanos recording RBIs and Rhys Hoskins and Harper homering.
Philadelphia held the Braves down for a final score of 9-1. The Padres didn’t produce quite as much of an impact offensively in their NLDS games, though they did secure an overall win in four games.
Regardless, this series is especially meaningful to both teams. They truly came in as underdogs with the Phillies finishing third in their division behind the Braves and Mets, and the Padres finishing second, 22 games behind the Dodgers.
The Phillies hadn’t been to the NLCS since 2010 and hadn’t been in the playoffs at all since 2011. The Padres hadn’t been in the NLCS since 1998 and the playoffs since 2006 (excluding the shortened 2020 campaign).
Now, one of the two is guaranteed a spot in the World Series, which would be the first time in over a decade for the Phillies and over two decades for the Padres.
