New York Mets fans may have accepted that ace Jacob deGrom could sign elsewhere, but signing with one of these three teams will break their hearts.
This year’s MLB free agency class is extremely top-heavy, with outfielder Aaron Judge ranking atop the list of best players, and four top-tier shortstops in Trea Turner, Carlos Correa, Dansby Swanson, and Xander Bogaerts all available. When it comes to starting pitching, Jacob deGrom leads the way.
deGrom spent the entirety of his career with the New York Mets, and it’s entirely possible he could end up playing elsewhere at some point this winter. He’s 34 years old and looking for a lucrative deal. Considering the team already signed Max Scherzer to such a deal, it’s unknown if they would do the same for deGrom.
Mets fans may have accepted the possibility that deGrom may leave for another team. But if it’s for one of these three teams, it may break their hearts.
Jacob deGrom destinations that would break Mets fans hearts: Los Angeles Dodgers
As a sports fan, it’s never a good thing to see your top player sign on with the powerhouse squad. That’s the Los Angeles Dodgers, who have shown over the years that they will not hesitate in bringing in as many big-name players as possible to win a World Series.
In 2020, they traded for Boston Red Sox outfielder Mookie Betts and signed him to a lucrative contract extension. At the 2021 trade deadline, they acquired Scherzer and Turner from the Washington Nationals. Ahead of the 2022 season, the team signed former Atlanta Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman to a long-term deal.
The Dodgers could very well do the same thing by bringing in a huge outside name. Could it be deGrom? If it were to happen, Mets fans won’t like the idea of the Dodgers getting even stronger on paper after signing their former ace.
