The Atlanta Braves, Oakland Athletics, and Milwaukee Brewers pulled off a huge trade involving catchers Sean Murphy and William Contreras. Here are the prospects that were on the move in the deal.
This offseason, reports indicated that the Oakland Athletics were once again open to moving one of their key players to a new team. This time, it was catcher Sean Murphy. There were multiple teams interested in Murphy, but the asking price was reportedly high. There was one team that jumped in to get the top catcher available in free agency and the trade block following the Willson Contreras signing.
According to ESPN MLB insider Jeff Passan, the Athletics traded Murphy to the Atlanta Braves. But the deal wasn’t done there, as the Braves were sending catcher William Contreras to the Milwaukee Brewers, making it a three-team trade. Manny Pina was sent to Oakland.
But the deal was not done yet, as there were multiple players also involved in the deal. And yes, that includes prospects. Here are all the prospects on the move in the deal.
Every prospect moved in Braves-Brewers-A’s trade involving Sean Murphy, William Contreras
The Braves are not receiving any prospect in this deal, as they’re only receiving Murphy. Now, here are the prospects heading over to the Athletics and the Brewers:
- To Athletics: LHP Kyle Muller (Braves No. 1 prospect) Utility man Esteury Ruiz (Brewers No. 8 prospect), RHP Freddy Tarnok (Braves No. 6 prospect), RHP Royber Salinas (Braves No. 18 prospect)
- To Brewers: RHP Justin Yeager (from Braves)
Oakland did get a pretty big haul of prospects in trading away Murphy. They received three of Atlanta’s top 20 prospects, including the No. 1 ranked Kyle Muller. Tarnok and Ruiz being dealt to the Athletics was reported by FanSided MLB insider Robert Murray.
Muller pitched between Triple-A Gwinnett and Atlanta this past season. In 23 starts in Triple-A, the left-handed pitcher recorded a 3.41 ERA, a 1.18 WHIP, 159 strikeouts and 40 walks over 134.2 innings.
Ruiz didn’t spent much time with Milwaukee, as he was acquired from the San Diego Padres in the Josh Hader trade at the deadline. With Triple-A Nashville, Ruiz recorded a .329 batting average, a .402 on-base percentage, a .459 slugging percentage, three home runs, 19 RBI, 30 runs scored, and 48 hits.
Tarnok spent time between Double-A Mississippi and Triple-A Gwinnett. Through 25 games, the right-hander posted a 4.05 ERA, a 1.28 WHIP, 124 strikeouts, and 44 walks over 106.2 innings.
Salinas pitched in 25 games in Single-A Augusta and Advanced-A Rome, recording a 3.55 ERA, 175 strikeouts and 63 walks over 109.0 innings.
Meanwhile, the lone prospect heading over to Milwaukee is Yeager from Atlanta. In 49 total games with Rome and Mississippi, Yeager owned a 3.79 ERA, 81 strikeouts, and 32 walks in 52.1 innings.
So there you have it, all of the prospects who were on the move in the big Murphy-Contreras-Pina trade between Oakland, Atlanta, and Milwaukee.
