Trevor Story underwent elbow surgery that will cause him to miss indefinite time but Red Sox teammate Kiké Hernandez called out a reporter on one detail.
A frustrating offseason for Red Sox fans only continued on Tuesday with bad news on soon-to-be shortstop Trevor Story. Bob Nightengale was first to report that Story underwent UCL surgery on his elbow to repair damage that had been bothering him for quite a while. He’ll miss time in the 2023 season and his timetable is undetermined as of right now.
One of the infuriating details of Nightengale’s report, however, was that Story knew he could need surgery after the 2022 season but delayed doing so in hopes that rest would allow him to play through it, which obviously did not happen.
But if you ask one of Story’s Red Sox teammates, super-utilityman Kiké Hernandez, that’s not the case. Hernandez had a frank response to Nightengale about that aspect of the Story injury and didn’t hold black from blasting the reporting.
Red Sox: Kiké Hernandez calls out Bob Nightengale for reporting Trevor Story delayed surgery to try and heal with rest
That’s a pretty plain way to say how Hernandez feels about that.
Even if things are not well among the Red Sox fan base during an offseason when Xander Bogaerts left after a disgraceful effort by the front office to keep him (and even in spite of signing Rafael Devers to an extension), it would be wild for one of the team’s stars to withhold surgery seemingly out of stubbornness in order to miss time during the season.
What the truth of the matter really is, at this point, remains to be seen. But what we do know is that Story is out, Boston has no confirmed middle infield right now, and Hernandez is calling out a reporter for how he said Story dealt with the injury.
If nothing else, the Red Sox are never boring.
