While the Atlanta Braves are expected to be in the hunt for the National League pennant in 2023, not every player is having a good spring.
Though most of the spots on the Atlanta Braves Opening Day roster have been set since spring training began last month, several players could have greatly helped their cause by putting up solid numbers in the Grapefruit League.
But so far, a few players have failed to impress and may find themselves, not only out of the starting lineup, but off the team altogether. There’s still time left, but let’s look at three Braves players who’ve been the biggest losers of the spring so far.
3. Biggest losers of Atlanta Braves spring training so far: Mike Soroka
Okay, I’m not going to beat up on Mike Soroka too badly. Most of his issues stem from injury. But the availability is crucial, especially if you’re trying to make a statement and find a spot in the starting rotation.
Soroka is currently sidelined with a hamstring injury. The right-hander was thought to be among those competing for a spot in the Braves rotation, but this latest setback has eliminated any chances of Soroka making the Opening Day roster.
Instead, once he is fully healthy, Soroka will have to begin the 2023 season at Triple-A Gwinnett in order to build up his stamina. With the Braves rotation already loaded, Soroka will have a tough task ahead when he’s finally deemed healthy enough to toe the rubber.
Outside of six starts in the minor leagues, Mike Sororka hasn’t pitched since 2020. He was the youngest Opening Day starter in Atlanta Braves history that season, but Achilles injuries have greatly affected Soroka’s ability to return to the mound.
