New York Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe recorded his first career hit on Saturday vs. the San Francisco Giants, and his parents were there to witness it.
The New York Yankees made a very popular move amongst the fanbase to name top prospect Anthony Volpe their starting shortstop for the 2023 season. He played in his first career MLB game on Thursday, when he went hitless in two at-bats.
But in his second game, he got his first hit.
On Saturday, Volpe stepped up to the plate in the second inning and on a 1-2 count, he hit a single off pitcher Alex Cobb and past a diving Brandon Crawford for his first career hit.
In the crowd to witness the feat was Volpe’s mother and father, who had a heartwarming reaction to the play.
Anthony Volpe records first career hit in second game with Yankees
The first hit of many.
After this hit, Volpe recorded his second stolen base of the season.
In recent years, the Yankees bowed out on acquiring some of the top shortstops available in free agency, as they had Volpe in the minor league system. Volpe wasn’t just the top prospect in the Yankees’ minor league system, but he was a top five prospect in all of baseball.
This spring, Volpe competed with Isiah Kiner-Falefa and Oswald Peraza for the starting shortstop position. In the field, he played error-free baseball at the shortstop position, and he was impressive in the batter’s box. In 19 games, Volpe recorded a .309 batting average, a .415 on-base percentage, a .618 slugging percentage, three home runs, five RBI, 13 runs scored, and 17 hits.
Yankees fans have been patiently waiting for Volpe to make it to the majors. He made it for the start of the 2023 season, and he already has his first hit in just his second game.
