The New York Mets were the subject of a controversial replay review as Pete Alonso was called out on first base against the Miami Marlins.
The New York Mets haven’t had the best of luck in terms of officiating in 2023. In the season-opening game, Mets second baseman Jeff McNeil was issued a strike on a pitch-clock violation because Pete Alonso took too long to make it to first base after getting walked. In the third game of the season, there was even more controversy surrounding the Mets.
On Saturday against the Miami Marlins, Alonso attempted to outrun a ground ball he hit to third baseman Jean Segura, who threw it to first baseman Garrett Cooper to get the first out of the seventh inning.
The thing is, Cooper’s foot wasn’t touching first base, meaning that Alonso should have been safe. Surely a replay review would correct the error?
Nope. Even after replay review, Alonso was still ruled out.
MLB replay fails Mets and Pete Alonso
It wasn’t all bad for the Mets that inning. Two batters later, outfielder Mark Canha hit a solo home run to left center field to extend New York’s lead to 5-2.
In the top of the ninth inning, Alonso hit a single to left field, and reached second on a single by outfielder Tommy Pham. Alonso was brought home on a ground-rule double hit by outfielder Starling Marte to extend New York’s lead to 6-2.
Alonso went 2-for-3 on the day, where knocked in one run and scored two on his own.
It was a controversial call made by the replay review team, but it wasn’t that costly for New York, as they picked up the 6-2 victory and improved to 2-1 on the season. The two teams close out the series on Sunday at 1:40 p.m. ET.
