Luis Severino seems entirely unhappy with how the Yankees are working him back from injury.
Luis Severino is on his way back from injury. Right now for Yankees fans, hearing “on the way back from injury” is music to the ears. For any player.
But the organization is not rushing things with Severino, easing him into his rehabilitation process and making the entire thing, frankly, somewhat painstakingly slow. Instead of putting Severino in a low minor league game to get the pace of the game, the team had him to a simulated game in a bullpen session.
According to Brian Hoch, that seems to have annoyed Severino, who wanted to get into a meaningful game of some sort as soon as possible.
“At the end, if I’m the only one who wants something and they don’t agree with that, they’re not going to let me do something,” Severino said. “But hopefully, for now on, they trust me more and try to let me compete more.”
Luis Severino wants what Yankees fans want: Starters back in the lineup
Luis Severino wants to get back at it, it’s as simple as that. The team obviously is a little skittish with how much has gone wrong this year on the injury front and moving as conservatively as possible. Severino, too, has some history with injuries. So it’s not as if this shift is entirely unwarranted.
But Severino, who has watched plenty of games from the dugout this year, also knows the urgency and what he can provide to help the team. New York is losing early games in a very competitive division, and needs its talent, like himself, back on the field as soon as possible.
Severino knows a bullpen session keeps him from progressing through the recovery hoops fast enough to get back in the starting rotation.
It’s not as if Severino is a rookie or completely green to the whole thing. He’s in his seventh big league season and has had to make returns from several injuries before. How much good does a simulated game truly do for him?
