Los Angeles Angels MVP candidate Shohei Ohtani stole home against the New York Yankees because, ya know, why the hell not?
The Angels executed a double-steal against the Yankees on Tuesday night, a rarity in today’s game but not on teams managed by Joe Maddon.
Ohtani has done pretty much everything this season, with stealing home now being added to that list. The AL MVP frontrunner has 42 home runs, which leads baseball, and a 3.00 ERA which ranked 21st among all pitchers with at least 100 innings pitched. Despite Babe Ruth-level expectations, Ohtani has exceeded those.
Philip Gosselin stole second base, allowing Ohtani to scamper home. It was perfectly-executed, and Ohtani was able to just barely slide under Gary Sanchez’s glove for another highlight you can add to his rapidly-expanding reel.
Los Angeles Angels: It’s a shame we won’t get playoff Shohei Ohtani
Barring an unprecedented run, Ohtani’s season will end after Game 162. Ohtani’s campaign has been anything but precedented, but that would be rather unexpected, even for him.
Ohtani and Mike Trout on the same team for at least a few seasons gives some level of hope to the Angels postseason chances moving forward, assuming they can stay healthy at the same time.
