Despite losing their final game of the season without a chance at the postseason, Oakland Athletics outfielder Starling Marte had a heartwarming message to share on Twitter.
Oakland Athletics outfielder Starling Marte was feeling emotional after a 7-6 loss to the Houston Astros finalized their seasons end.
Marte has had a difficult couple of seasons. Back in May 2020, when he was still playing with the Arizona Diamondbacks, his wife Noelia passed away suddenly from a heart attack. He had to grieve the loss of the mother of his children during a global pandemic in which the state of baseball was often up in the air.
For awhile, Marte considered retiring after her tragic death and it took weeks of support from his family, friends, and church to commit to continuing his baseball career.
Nearly a year and a half since that heartbreaking event, Marte took to Twitter to thank his late wife and others who pushed him to succeed through trying times.

In a list of gracious thank yous, Marte’s note to Noelia stands out. Since her passing, the MLB All-Star has played for three different teams. Arizona traded Marte to the Miami Marlins in late Aug. 2020, just a few months after Noelia’s death. He played 28 games for the Marlins before a pitch broke his hand in the postseason and we was forced to sit out.
In July 2021, Marte became a member of the Oakland Athletics as he looked to continue one of his best performing seasons of his career despite multiple injury setbacks. Unfortunately, he did not get another chance at the playoffs as the Athletics were eliminated from Wild Card contention just a few days ago.
For such a talented player to endure personal tragedy and fight through a range of injuries, it is deeply impressive that Marte finds a way to stay positive and spread his gratitude around.
