Mariners targeting top free agent in addition to Kris Bryant

Kris Bryant is not the only free agent the Seattle Mariners are looking at, per FanSided MLB insider Robert Murray.

The Seattle Mariners have already made two splash moves this offseason by acquiring infielder Adam Frazier from the San Diego Padres and signing AL Cy Young winner Robbie Ray to a five-year contract. Despite these two big moves, the team who was so close to clinching a postseason berth are apparently going all-in on the 2022 season.

FanSided MLB insider Robert Murray reported earlier this week that the Mariners had interest in former Chicago Cubs and San Francisco Giants utility player Kris Bryant. But they are not stopping there, as Murray reports on Tuesday that Seattle is also looking at Colorado Rockies shortstop Trevor Story.

Mariners interested in free agent shortstop Trevor Story

Story remains as one of the top shortstops available on the market currently, alongside Carlos Correa. Seattle’s rivals, the Texas Rangers, managed to sign both Marcus Semien and Corey Seager to long-term deals this week. The Detroit Tigers agreed to terms with Javier Baez on a six-year contract on Tuesday.

The Mariners do have the shortstop position filled by J.P. Crawford. But where would Story play if he were to sign with Seattle? MLB Network insider Jon Heyman tweeted out that the Mariners want Story to play third base, which is vacant after the team declined the club option on Kyle Seager.

Story slashed .251/.329/.471 while recording 24 home runs, 75 RBI, 88 runs and 132 hits in 142 games this past season.

After almost making the postseason for the first time since 2011, the Mariners are devoted to making a clinched berth a reality in 2022. That is evidenced by their moves thus far and their interest in both Bryant and Story.
