Phillies get injury news that won’t help them recover from bad start

Heading into their June 1 game versus the San Francisco Giants, the Philadelphia Phillies get terrible injury news concerning Jean Segura and Bryce Harper.

The Philadelphia Phillies are 0-2 in their current series against the San Francisco Giants, and their odds heading into the third and final game of the series just dipped considerably.

Hours before the game, Phillies insider Jim Salisbury shared two critical injury updates: shortstop Jean Segura is out for 10-12 weeks, and right fielder Bryce Harper is out with right forearm soreness.

Without Segura and Harper, the Phillies aren’t expected to come out of Citizens Bank Park with a win to wrap up the series.

Jean Segura, Bryce Harper injuries hurt Phillies in Giants series

The Phillies have been critiqued for a messy series against the Giants, in which “two teams with struggling bullpens went to extra innings,” as NBC Sports Bay Area’s Alex Pavlovic put it.

One narrative that seemed to encapsulate Philadelphia’s struggles was Jeurys Familia’s inability to tie his shoe.

Philadelphia sportscaster Mark Henry Jr. compiled a list of everything that Phillies manager Joe Girardi got wrong during their last game.

Henry Jr. points out that Girardi’s decision to have Segura, one of the team’s best hitters, bunt was a costly one: that’s how Segura injured his right finger.

It’s a difficult time to be a Phillies fan, considering that Segura won’t return until the Phillies are likely out of playoff contention.

Blowing two contested Giants games is frustrating enough, but losing two key players as they fall behind in the NL East is a devastating blow. Understandably, Philadelphia fans are ready to give up on the season the way Girardi seems to have done.

Currently, the Phillies are ranked third in the NL East with a 21-29 record. Without Jean Segura and Bryce Harper, that’s likely going to be 21-30 soon enough.
