Mets cult hero Bartolo Colon hasn’t lost confidence in retirement

New York Mets cult hero Bartolo Colon joined the Mets for Old Timers’ Day, and his confidence certainly hasn’t decreased since retiring.

New York Mets cult hero Bartolo Colon, humorously nicknamed “Big Sexy,” joined New York for Old Timers’ Day on Saturday night. He may not be in the majors anymore, but he’s still confident that if he were, he’d still get outs.

According to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com, Colon was asked if he’d still get outs in the majors, to which he replied, “Yes, though I have some age on me.”

He played for several teams over his 21-season career, and he certainly made an impact on everyone. Though he wasn’t the best pitcher in the league, he was truly one of a kind.

He joined upwards of 60 former New York players for the Old Timers’ Day, the organization’s first one held since 1994.

The Mets Tweeted a video of Colon practicing pitches, and he appears to still have his skill.

Over his lengthy career, he produced an ERA of 4.12, batting average against of .268 and WHIP of 1.31. He played for 12 different teams.

He made his MLB debut in 1997 with the Cleveland Indians, now the Cleveland Guardians. He retired in 2018 with the Texas Rangers.

The game will certainly be intriguing with the matchup being Colon vs Doc Gooden, who played the majority of his career with New York. Over Gooden’s 16-season career, he produced an ERA of 3.51, BAA of .244 and WHIP of 1.26.

The game will undoubtedly be a fun one to watch, and many will get to relive the good days of Colon’s pitching.
