Cubs fans were mulling the options at first base after signing Eric Hosmer previously but landing Trey Mancini gives Chicago a nice platoon.
The Chicago Cubs promised fans a huge offseason and, though the splashy moves haven’t been numerous, the team is going to be better and far more competitive in the 2023 MLB season. But now they’ve made another move that should improve the roster, particularly at first base and DH after the club already added veteran Eric Hosmer.
On Saturday night, the Cubs made an agreement with another veteran in Trey Mancini, who spent last season with the Orioles and World Series champion Astros once he was dealt at the trade deadline. Mancini gives Chicago more power and a right-handed compliment to the left-handed Hosmer to form a strong, experienced platoon.
ESPN’s Jesse Rogers was first with the report.
Trey Mancini contract details: Cubs sign veteran 1B to 2-year deal
As of right now, the full details of Mancini’s contract have not been reported. We know from Rogers’ report that it will be a two-year contract for the veteran with the Cubs and that there is an opt out for the second year, per the initial report.
Though they might not have landed Judge, deGrom or a multitude of the biggest names, Chicago looks like one of the winners of the MLB offseason. The goal is to get better and additions like Dansby Swanson, Jameson Taillon, Cody Bellinger, Hosmer and now Mancini, among others, helps the Cubs do that.
Given the timing of this deal with Mancini, it’s unlikely that the organization had to break the bank to get the deal agreed to, which is in their favor yet again. Now it’s all about getting better results on the diamond once Opening Day comes around.
